Don’t you wish that there were more than 24 hours in a day?
Sometimes, it seems that there are just not enough hours to get everything that you planned to do in a day.
And I’m sure that many times, you have wondered where all the time went, when you look at the time and it’s already time to start getting the kids ready for bed.
Everyone has the same number of hours but some people seem to be able to do more with the little time they have.
So in this blog post, I’ll share some of my tips that I successfully use to get A LOT done in a day.
By the way, I have two kids (5 and 9 which means lots of school homework, playing dolls, story times), a business to run and I’m involved in a lot of church and community events, so I’m one busy mama!
Ok, here we go!
5 ways to stretch your time and get more done!
1. Get a grip on email and social media!
Yes, I know this is a tough one!
Facebook and emails are huge time suckers. They can silently suck the life out of your day without you even knowing it!
I used to be a victim of this. I’d go on Facebook to have a quick look at something and before I knew it, I would have spent 2 hours looking at pictures of my friends cat, new shoes etc etc!
So what I did was that I consciously made an effort to stop the madness! To start off with, I turned off the notifications that kept popping up every time someone posted or made a comment.
Then I turned off chat! That was a life saver!
So here’s what I recommend, give yourself a set time (maybe twice a day or whatever feels good to you) when you go on Facebook and set a timer. When it goes off, that’s it! GET OFF THAT THING!
With emails, resist the temptation to check it every 5 minutes. Give yourself a set time too, maybe once in the morning and once before you go to bed. It works! I promise!
2. Use waiting time for activities that don’t task your brain
Here’s what I mean…. for example, when you are waiting in your car to pick up your kids from school, you could use that time to read one or two chapters of a book or make that quick call to book an appointment with the dentists.
Or while you are washing the dishes, you could use that time to listen to the replay of a tele-class or catch up on your favourite sermons!
Sometimes, I actually use that time to think about my business or what blog post I’m going to write next!
3. Use a timer
A simple kitchen timer or online timing tool could help you save a lot of time.
I actually love using timers because it makes me work faster when I realise that I only have 30 minutes or 60 minutes to get a task done.
So for example when I want to write a blog post, I set my timer for 60 minutes and that helps me to focus and not get tempted to hop around looking at other people’s websites.
By the way, I work best early in the morning before my kids wake up or later at night when they are in bed and using a timer at those times has been extremely helpful.
I highly recommend that you try using a timer in your daily tasks. You might not be able to time everything you do, (I don’t), but it will help do things faster when you time your key tasks.
Here’s a simple online one that I use and it’s free – http://e.ggtimer.com
4. Set deadlines
We all work differently. Deadlines work for some people and inspires them to get the job done and for some people, it could lead to them shutting down and feeling overwhelmed.
For me, nothing makes me work faster than when I know that I have a deadline in front of me!
If you are not sure where you stand with deadlines, you might want to set a deadline for mini-project and see if that makes you work faster.
5. Stop doing tasks that don’t inspire you
If you don’t like doing something, then the tendency is that you will spend ages on it!
So for those tasks, maybe it’s time to look for help and outsource.
For example, in my business, I don’t like doing Facebook ads. I hate having to analyse numbers and figures and it was taking so long to place one ad, so I decided that it was time to get someone else to do it!
Look at your tasks and delegate or outsource what does not inspire you. It will end up saving you time, and you can use that time to do things in your business that will make you more money!
So there you go. I hope you have found my 5 tips very useful.
If you are always not having enough time in your day, I encourage you to take charge of your day by implementing some of these tips.
Rome wasn’t built in a day, so it will take you a little while of continuous practice to nail it. However the good news is that it’s doable. You can have MORE than enough hours in your day!
Over to you…
